Hormonal IUD

A small device placed in the uterus, like your 24/7 bodyguard, always on

It releases a small amount of progestin to prevent pregnancy for 3 - 8 years. Once it's in, there's nothing to remember and typically removal is simple when you're ready. Less than 1 out of 100 can get pregnant using this method.

What to expect

🩺 Procedure

Placement is quick, usually just a few minutes, but people experience it differently. Some feel mild discomfort, while others have stronger cramping or pain. Most find pain eases after the procedure. Ask about pain control when scheduling so you'll know what's available and what to expect. Please come to the visit with your questions and a summary of your medical history, including the date of your last period. This method will require a physical exam. Please keep in mind that clinic registration and visit processes vary by location.

📅 First Weeks

You might feel some cramping or spotting in the first few days which is normal as your body adjusts. Most people start feeling back to normal within a week or two. Some acne, headaches, or mood changes can happen early on.

🩸 Periods

Expect lighter periods, less predictable periods, or even no bleeding at all over time. Some people have spotting at first, but cramps and flow usually get milder within a few months.

❌ Removal

A provider can take it out anytime and for any reason in just a few minutes. Fertility can return quickly usually within the first few months.

Understanding Options
  • There are four hormonal IUDs available in the US.
  • They can be used from 3 years - 8 years depending on the brand.
  • They differ in the amount of hormones that are in the IUD and for how long a person can use them.
  • Even with the differences, they all work the same at preventing pregnancy.
  • All hormonal IUDs are over 99% effective.
